The moderator is Judge Emerson R. Thompson, Jr.; Attorney Temika Hampton-Johnson will face incumbent Judge Mikaela Nix-Walker in Group 1. A third candidate in that race, attorney Charles Hart, is not taking part in the forum. Attorneys Christina Arguelles and Christie Lou Mitchell are competing to fill an open judgeship in Group 2. Kamilah Perry, chief legal counsel and chief administrator of office operations for the State Attorney’s Office, will face Steve Kerestes, a prosecutor in the State Attorney’s Office, in an open Group 31 race. LWVOC is preparing packets for 6300 postcards directed to the 3 lowest turnout precincts in Orange County to promote Vote411.org and the dates of the upcoming elections. Packets will be available for pickup at Hot Topics on July 15 including cards, address labels, stamps, and directions of how to complete them and post by July 22. |  | | Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility Co-Chair Virginia Meany (shown upper left) participated in the 3rd Central Florida Black History Bus Tour sponsored by the education focused nonprofit Paving Pathways led by President Patricia Bebe (pictured below). They learned about the vibrant and resilient communities of Goldsboro, Georgetown, Midway (all now part of Sanford), visited the historic segregated school, Hopper Academy, and took a bus ride through the Parramore neighborhood, which since its inception in the late 1800s has always been a hub for Black history, culture and excellence. It was a day rich with meaning, sadness and gratitude. Jill and Paul Heroux, Immigration Committee Co-Chairs (shown with Patricia) were honored for their contributions in making the Tour a reality. | | |
| The Passing of Icons - Our deepest condolences upon the passing of longtime Leaguer Charles Davis, shown left with his wife Carol, former LWVOC Co-President. They honored us as stalwart advocates for voting rights and truly, both were very special "Warriors for Democracy". Also, Sister Gail Grimes-shown right, passed this week. She co-founded Hope CommUnity Center one of our longstanding partners for promoting immigrant rights and votes for all. Not only will their memories be a blessing, but their legacies will also live on through the people they helped. | | SAVE THE DATE!
