LWVOC is opening 2026 with a very important discussion on the Constitution's First Amendment, the essential cornerstone of American democracy--freedom of speech.  The pressure that many feel about the "siege on free speech" is affecting everyday life by fostering self-censorship out of fear of social or professional retaliation. The weakening of institutions like education and media, both public and profit, are contributing to increased political polarization and social distrust. Join us for this very important discussion next week: Muzzled: A Siege on Speech, January 14  Register HERE

This timely conversation will bring together informed voices and engaged community members who care about transparency, accountability, and the future of a free press. The moderator is Charley Williams, a former president of the League of Women Voters of Orange County. Panelists include Judith Smelser, president and general manager of Central Florida Public Media (formerly WMFE); Bob Shaw, a retired editor for the Orlando Sentinel and President of the Florida First Amendment Foundation, and Greg Herbert, a Greenberg Traurig attorney who specializes in media law.

Leaguer Life Lately

LWVOC Targeted Outreach Team (TOTS) members l-r:  VS Chair Kathy Sheerin, Melinda Wright and Saudi Ellis attended the Pine Hills Community Council Open House & Oath of Office ceremony for new PHCC President Julien Serrano-O’Neil and BOD on January 6th at the Orange County Multicultural Center. It was an inspiring event filled with Orange County movers and shakers supporting the youngest PHCC President in the organization’s 54 year old history. Pictured right are President Julien Serrano-O’Neil, Immediate Past President Dr. Latanya Nichols, and 1st VP Sandra Fatmi-Hall.
Leaguer and ACT Co-Founder Kam Shenai has thoughts; reprinted from Jan 2 Orlando Sentinel Opinion Section: "Here’s the reality: under current law, Social Security’s trust funds are projected to run out in 2035 — just nine years from now. Those trust funds are savings built up over time. Once they’re gone, Social Security doesn’t disappear — but it can only pay benefits using money coming in from workers’ paychecks."

The Immigration Committee invites you to attend a JAN 15 local event hosted by the Center for Common Ground Workers Circle.
One of the 2026 Goals for the Immigration Committee is to educate members on immigration issues, provide accurate information and how to be an effective advocate for impacted communities and individuals. The Workers Circle is a social justice organization providing leadership with immigration actions. This month's topic is "Attacks on Immigrants and Inhumane Acts Committed by ICE"
