March is definitely coming in like a lion!  We've already been very busy this month with volunteering, rallying for democracy, planning great events and oh, it's also Women's History Month!  To all of our women members, we celebrate YOU!  And we encourage women and men of every generation who are seeking an outlet for their need to "do something," JOIN us because we're making a difference in 2025!

As the economy takes a downturn, how many more will become unhoused in central Florida?  At next week's Hot Topics, we're discussing new laws that outlaw "camping" on public property, community disputes for new shelter proposals, and an innovative collaboration of news media formed to cover these recent developments and more.  Register HERE

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

We answered the CALL to ACTION from our national LWVUS and showed up to Tuesday's Democracy Rally at Orlando City Hall.  What can you do?  Follow us on social media (links at top right of this email) for updates to other opportunities.  Make note of a recent op-ed by Ann Patton about "5 Things to Do NOW" for democracy.

Interested in learning more about local housing? The City of Orlando The Office of Human Relations is facilitating a 3-week fair housing training series for each City of Orlando District. The series for District 6 is scheduled for March 12, 19, and 26, 2025 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center. The series is being offered at other locations on different dates; interested parties are welcome to attend the series that fits their scheduling needs. Click HERE for details.
VOLUNTEERS in Action!  League members, encouraged by the GVP and Natural Resources Committees, showed up for a Pine Hills clean-up with YaYa's Dream Foundation and Moms Demand Action. Studies have shown that clean n'hoods reduce gun violence and are good for the environment.

TAKE ACTION against HB 1205, the House version of the attack on citizen-led amendments is scheduled for Thursday at 9:00 AM in the Government Operations Subcommittee ( Sumner Hall (404 HOB) legislation currently under consideration to take power from Florida's citizen-led amendment process! To make your voice heard, Click HERE
TAKE ACTION and tell your members of Congress to OPPOSE this act!
It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections.  The bill's requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and seeks to divide us.  It also creates another barrier to voting. Statewide call to action: The League of Women Voters supports the Florida Right to Clean Water campaign, a citizens' initiative to amend the Florida Constitution with the right to clean and healthy waters. If our current laws were working, then we wouldn’t have manatees dying in record numbers, 80% of our 1000 springs impaired, and harmful blue-green algae and red tide in greater frequency and duration. A constitutional right takes precedence over legislation that permits pollution, restricts fertilizer bans, and allows radioactive materials to be used in our roads. Create a legacy for the future of our waters!

The Right to Clean Water! In support of establishing our basic right to clean and healthy water, LWVOC has committed to helping get this citizen initiative on the 2026 ballot. Please sign your own petition. Those who signed prior to 2024 will need to sign the new petition.
