The DEIA Committee invites our members and supporters to think deeply about the origins of Black History Month: what are we celebrating and what does it mean to our League and each of us?  Leaguer Jane Hursch has shared her essay; click to READ HERE.
Besides our own LWVOC celebration-register at Feb 14 HOT TOPICS, Orange County offers many opportunities to observe, learn about and participate in activities that honor Black history:

Spaces are filling up quickly!  "Lift Your Voice" with us and don't miss your chance to attend one of our MOST popular League events...the celebration of Black History Month!  But with the inspiration that our panel will bring, it will also be a call to ACTION.  We must acknowledge the politically motivated attempts coming out of our state government to erase Black culture and history, especially the State Department (Division of Elections) and Department of Education. Before the program, Dr. Ethel Wellington Trawick, a retired educator, will sing the hymn "Lift Every Voice and Sing," known as the Black National Anthem.
At Hot Topics, you can support the FREEDOM TO READ.  Desmond Reid, owner of DARE Books will have a selection of books available to purchase and donate at Hot Topics.
Alternatively, If you have a book on a banned book list you would like to donate, please bring your book to add to the collection. (The Pen America Index of Banned Books has a list of titles.)  All books will be distributed throughout the year at community events. Questions, contact Virginia Meany at vmeany1025@gmail.com.

Learn more about one of the Speakeasy partners:  Digital Democracy Project is a nonpartisan nonprofit providing a free mobile app for voters to submit their votes on real, upcoming bills that will be voted on in Tallahassee. Voters can organize and compile their input in this digital space in that the more votes submitted- the more we can continue to increase the pressure to influence how our legislators decide to vote! Then, check out our legislator scorecards revealing how well our legislators' votes followed the will of their voters, so we can see how well they are listening and hold them accountable at the ballot box!  www.digitaldemocracyproject.org
ELECTION 2024 NEWS
LWVOC President Tiffany Hughes was recently interviewed by NEWS 6 about the upcoming election.
“In this upcoming election, we want to make sure that we are increasing the number of people who are getting to the ballot box‚” said Hughes. “We’ve begun hosting what we call our “Speakeasies.” It usually happens at a tavern or a bar or a restaurant, in order to encourage our young professionals to get involved, get engaged, get registered.”
