Opioids were the first cause or a contributing factor in almost 3,900 deaths in Florida in 2015, a 23 percent jump over the year before.

Only four states had larger percentage increases. Florida figures for 2016 have not been released, but health and law enforcement officials say the death toll shot up even faster last year and is headed higher in 2017.

What can be done?
